ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT: Dam busters

The UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Cepal) recently warned that South America needs to double its energy capacity by 2030 in order to avoid blackouts. Cepal estimates that the region needs to add about 200 gigawatts (GW) to its overall generation capacity in order to cope with forecast demand. It puts the total required investment, inclusive of transmission lines, at over US$500bn, which should fuel continued investment – foreign and local – in this fast-growing region.
