President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela said this week that he would organise a
meeting between Presidents Alvaro Uribe of Colombia and Daniel Ortega of
Nicaragua to resolve their dispute over a shared maritime border in the
Caribbean. The Venezuelan leader said that he rang Uribe on 15 March and Ortega
to fix a meeting. Both presidents said that they would be prepared to meet each
other, though it is not clear what role, if any, Chávez would have, especially
given the tension between him and Uribe over his mediation between the Colombian
government and the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc).
