Normally, an internal row in the third biggest national party would merit only a cursory mention. Current events in the left-wing Partido de la Revolución Democrático (PRD), are likely, however, to have major bearing the presidential election scheduled for 1 July 2012. On 26 October, the PRD faction that is one-eyed in its support for Andrés Manuel López Obrador, a radical, deliberately made an example of Víctor Hugo Lobo, a key supporter of the more moderate mayor of Mexico City, Marcelo Ebrard. Ebrard was a protégé of López Obrador’s, but both are now competing for the position of standard bearer for the Left in the 2012 contest.
