VENEZUELA: And then there were three

The race is now officially on to find a worthy opponent for President Hugo Chávez in next October’s presidential elections. Registration for February’s party primary elections within the opposition coalition Mesa de la Unidad Democrática (MUD) ends on 3 November. The pool of candidates shrank significantly in the days leading up to the deadline. Seven remain, but only three now look like genuine contenders: Henrique Capriles Radonski, the governor of Miranda; Leopoldo López, whose candidacy faces legal uncertainties; and Pablo Pérez, the governor of the western state of Zulia. Recent developments suggest there is a very real prospect of the MUD electing the man least likely to trouble Chávez.
