NICARAGUA: Ortega poised for dubious victory

President Daniel Ortega appears all but assured of victory in his illegal bid for re-election on 6 November, a result that would signify the single biggest setback to democracy in the country since its return to democratic rule in 1990. With concerns of fraud dominating the close of the campaign (and prompting the hitherto reticent US and domestic private sector to express concern), two key sources of uncertainty remain: the credibility of the electoral process on voting day (which, unlike the highly questioned 2008 municipal elections, will be observed by international watchdogs); and - not unrelated - the extent of victory for Ortega´s Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) in the legislative contest.
