BRAZIL: ‘Nem’ to the good times for Rio drug gangs

Ahead of the rumoured pacification of another two notorious Rio favelas this weekend, the state’s Institute of Public Security (ISP) has released figures suggesting that violent crime has fallen sharply. Rio’s state security secretary José Mariano Beltrame hailed the results as proof that his ambitious security policy is on track. “Now it’s time to invest in further police training”, he stated, in a clear nod to the continued problem of entrenched official police corruption.
