COLOMBIA: “Colombia is well-known, but not known well”

With these words, President Juan Manuel Santos summarised the main problem he faces: getting rid of the bad reputation acquired by Colombia over the past 50 years in relation to violence and drugs. And during his first official state visit to the UK, the numbers that speak of Colombia’s improvements in recent years were on his side, making that task a bit easier. “Since I was sworn in as President, we have created more than 1,085,000 jobs”, President Santos states in the official publication printed to mark his visit. In fact, the reduction of the unemployment rate to a single figure could be seen as one of his administration’s main accomplishments in its first 15 months in power: the unemployment rate of 9.7% for September was the lowest level attained since 2001 and represented a reduction of almost one percentage point compared with the same month in 2010 (10.6%).
