President Hugo Chávez is calling it “vital” for 21st century Socialism and stamping out the “vices of capitalism”. The new law of just prices and costs, which took effect on 22 November, elicited a rather different response from the political opposition and private business. Dreading its implementation ever since it was first approved in July, they claim that the law is distinctly unrevolutionary and will lead to far greater pain than gain for Venezuelans, especially the poor, because it fails to address the underlying causes of inflation.
