It was a little ironic that Brazil’s federal police decided to go on strike at all border stations this week, just days after Paraguayan members of the Mercosur parliament (Parlasur) had publicly accused Brazil of “provocative intimidation” on the tri-border area close to Paraguay’s Ciudad del Este. The Paraguayan delegates accused Brazil of intimidating military displays of armoured vehicles and heavy equipment along the border, “contrary to international agreements and the spirit of Mercosur”. Alfonso González Nuñez, who led the Paraguayan delegation, said that Mercosur has become “a serious conflict of interests, almost an undeclared war”.
