ENGLISH-SPEAKING CARIBBEAN: Assassination plot trumps elections
Two elections on the same day in the English-speaking Caribbean would normally expect to grab most of the headlines, but developments in the sub-region’s economic powerhouse Trinidad & Tobago eclipsed election day in Guyana and St Lucia as the biggest news story of the week. In a remarkable televised press conference on 24 November Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago, claimed that she, and three cabinet ministers, had been the target of an assassination plot planned by renegade members of the security forces.
