ARGENTINA: On the brink of “historic development”

This week the minister of federal planning, Julio de Vido, who was ratified at the helm of the ministry [WR-11-49] despite repeatedly hinting that he would leave the cabinet if President Cristina Fernández secured re-election, said that Argentina “is on the brink of historic development” as a result of the discovery of mass shale gas and oil deposits in the Patagonian province of Neuquén. Interestingly, De Vido chose to mention a comment made by US President Barack Obama to Fernández during the latest G20 summit in Cannes, France, in which he said that Argentina’s shale gas reserves are the third-largest in the world.
