MEXICO: Big drop in US border arrests

On 12 December Alan Bersin, the US Customs & Border Protection (CBP) commissioner, said that 340,252 illegal immigrants were apprehended on the US’s south-western border in Fiscal Year (FY) 2010/11, which ended on 30 September. The CBP attributed the fall to the poor performance of the US economy and a pickup in the Mexican economy. A more frightening reason is that Central American migrants have been put off trying to reach the US via Mexico because of the growing violence against them in Mexico.
