MEXICO: Army gets more aggressive with the DTOs

Over the past year a marked shift has taken place in Mexico’s drug wars. Unlike the first four years of the Felipe Calderón administration, when most of the violence was taking place between the warring drug trafficking organisations (DTOs), with only minimal participation of government forces, the army has considerably increased its actions against the DTOs. The number of fatalities it has inflicted on the DTOs in the first 11 months of 2011 more than doubles the total for the previous four years.
