The La Niña weather phenomenon has pushed the mercury to incredibly high numbers in the Southern Cone, where temperatures of 40° Centigrade have been occurring regularly for several weeks. The lack of rain and the scorching sun have cracked the soil and depleted sub-soil water levels, leaving agri producers looking up to the sky in the hope that rains will come soon to prevent multi-billion dollar losses, mainly to the corn and soya crops. Thus far, Argentina appears to be the worst affected with the three main grain-producing provinces - known as the Humid Pampa (Buenos Aires, Santa Fe and Entre Ríos), where 80% of the country’s soya is produced - registering very little rainfall in December.
