MEXICO: Fatalities rise, cartel influence spreads

Partial official figures show a further increase in the number of drug-war fatalities, as well as a trend towards a greater annual toll than those calculated by private observers. The government insists on its message that the violence is highly localised, but evidence has been mounting (even from official sources) that the influence of cartels extends far beyond the hotspots of drug-war violence. Complicating the panorama is the emergence of splinters of the major cartels that are heavily involved in criminal activity
