VENEZUELA: Minister admits failure to curb homicide rate

ccording to the Observatorio Venezolano de Violencia (OVV), a private monitoring organisation, last year was ‘the most violent in Venezuela’s history’, with the number of homicides rising to 19,336. On 11 January Interior Minister Tarek el Aissami said that though the government had managed to ‘reverse’ the rates of most high-impact crimes in the last few years, in the case of homicide it had failed ‘to break through that hard floor of 48 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants.’
