CHILE: Mapuche militants blamed for huge forest fires

The government of President Sebastián Piñera has rushed to blame a radical Mapuche organisation for having started forest fires that swept through three regions with large Mapuche populations, affecting the estates of one of the country’s largest logging firms. The militants have denied this but claimed responsibility for one attack, while a string of others, plus riots in Santiago, went unclaimed. The government has announced that it will invoke the antiterrorist law against the arsonists and the rioters.
