Former president Alvaro Uribe (2002-2010) was well-known for his confrontations with the judiciary; under his successor, President Juan Manuel Santos, these rows seemed to be a thing of the past - until this week. Santos openly questioned a highly sensitive ruling relating to the November 1985 military operations to retake control of the palace of justice, which had been taken over by M-19 guerrillas (see sidebar). The problem for Santos is that in addition to the numerous magistrates who criticised his public reaction to the ruling, members of the political opposition, the relatives of the disappeared and civil society groups also condemned his position.
