Argentina | South Atlantic “militarisation” denounced. On 8 February President Cristina Fernández made three announcements regarding the escalating tensions with the UK over the Falklands/Malvinas sovereignty question: 1) she decreed the establishment of a commission, led by Colonel Augusto Rattenbach, to prepare the full declassification of the so-called Rattenbach Report, commissioned by the military junta in 1982 and completed by the Colonel’s father, General Benjamín Rattenbach, in 1983; 2) she invited all political parties to accompany her to the 14 June meeting of the UN’s Committee on Decolonization and announced that she will formally denounce the UK’s “militarisation of the South Atlantic”, which she declared “an American issue” and “a grave risk for international security”, before the UN Security Council; and 3) announced the creation of a mental health hospital to address post combat-related disorders – some 439 Malvinas War veterans committed suicide after the 1982 conflict.
