President Rafael Correa made an appeal to the armed forces at the weekend not to be deluded by “a revenge plan” drawn up by “traitors” with the aim of instigating a coup. The “traitors” in question, Correa said, were “the same politicians as always… retired officials in the army, totally in the service of the CIA… and a few active officials.” Correa said they were trying to sow discord in the military just as they had before “the 30S coup”, the police mutiny on 30 September 2010 which saw Correa sequestered in a hospital before being rescued by special forces.
