In what appears to be a regional trend, following Jamaica’s snap election late last year, Belize’s Prime Minister, Dean Barrow has set 7 March as the date for general elections, eleven months before the vote was constitutionally due. Barrow’s decision seems less risky than that of his then Jamaican peer, Andrew Holness (who was duly ejected), given the unity of his centre-right United Democratic Party (UDP), reasonable economic growth, and the apparent weakness of the opposition Christian democrat People’s United Party (PUP).
