Argentina | Cruise prevented from docking in Ushuaia. On 27 February the provincial authorities of Tierra del Fuego, the province to which the Malvinas Islands belong according to the Argentine position, prevented the docking of the Star Princess cruise ship in the capital’s port, Ushuaia. According to the deputy governor, Roberto Crocianelli, the ship had authorisation to dock until 25 February; once it had missed its deadline, the local government (with authorisation from the foreign ministry) decided to apply provincial law 852 (‘Gaucho Rivero Law’), which prevents the docking of ships sailing so-called “convenience flags”, which includes that of Barbados, where the ship is registered. The law, however, applies to ships performing “tasks related to the exploration and exploitation of natural resources or military vessels”. Thus, the UK has responded that “there is no excuse to intervene in a free and legitimate commercial activity”.
