Peru’s President Ollanta Humala now enjoys more support from the wealthiest sectors of society than he does the poorest. This remarkable transformation in the composition of his support base shows that he has surpassed the expectations of affluent Peruvians. He has maintained economic stability and encouraged foreign investment rather than pursuing a radical brand of nationalism many of them feared he might when he took office last July, and was rewarded for his focus on internal security with the capture of the Sendero Luminoso leader Florindo Eleuterio Flores Hala, alias “Artemio”, on 12 February [
WR-12-07]. This has all helped him to neutralise opposition in congress, but his disparate coalition Gana Perú looks bemused.
