BRAZIL: The gloves come off in São Paulo

As widely trailed in advance, José Serra of the main opposition Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB) has made a last-minute bid for the mayoralty of São Paulo. In keeping with the times, Serra announced his decision to run via Twitter on 27 February. The PSDB is bending its own democratising rules in an effort to prevent the federally ruling Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) from winning the country’s prize municipality on 7 October.
