DOMINICAN REPUBLIC | Lunar corruption. Former president Hipólito Mejía (2000-2004), the presidential candidate for the opposition Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD), gave a combative response to the annual state-of-the-nation address delivered by President Leonel Fernández [WR-12-09]. He accused the Fernández administration of having wasted more than two trillion pesos over the course of the last eight years. Mejía claimed that the stacks of $1,000 peso notes would stretch to the moon. He said Fernández suffered from an addiction compelling him to “look at the past to justify his mistakes”.
