In Brief - Honduras

Honduras | Retired bishop seeks presidency. On 12 March a retired bishop, Luis Alfonso Santos, repeated a suggestion that he might make a bid for the presidency of Honduras in the November 2013 general election.  The former bishop, who was asked because of his age (75) to step down from his post at the diocese of Copán by the Vatican in late 2011, said he would seek a nomination for the conservative traditional Partido Liberal (PL), which is currently in opposition. Santos said he was motivated to run by the number of poor in Honduras (over 60% of the 8.2m-strong population). He condemned the current government led by President Porfirio Lobo for not having any plan for the development of the country which, he pointed out, is rich in natural resources. Santos was clear that he would not support the PL “coupsters” (golpistas) who had supported the removal of the former president Manuel Zelaya (2006-2009). Santos is being promoted by a faction of the PL known as ‘Liberales Auténticos’. Zelaya has quit the PL to form his own party, Libertad y Refundación (Libre).
