President-elect Fernando Lugo appears to have won a truce from
landless groups, who have staged a number of land invasions in recent weeks,
until he takes office on 15 August. Lugo managed to get representatives from
both sides of the conflict to meet under the same roof for a workshop in
Asunción this week during which he presented some of his plans for land reform
and specialists from the World Bank shared their experiences of land reform
schemes in Bolivia, Brazil and Mexico. Ranchers, soya producers, loggers and
