The killing of seven federal policemen in Culiacán, Sinaloa early in
the morning of 27 May gave the authorities a nasty shock. This was the biggest
single cull of policemen since President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa took office on
1 December 2006. Politically, the nastiest aspect of the shock was the apparent
premeditation of the attack: the police were lured to a house where they were
attacked with grenades. This level of planning by gangsters suggests that there
is more than an element of wishful thinking in the government's repeated
assertions that the gangs are fighting each other much more than federal police
and troops.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1265 words.
