In Brief – Guatemala

Guatemala | More war criminals sentenced. On 20 March a Guatemalan court sentenced five former paramilitaries to 7,710 years in prison in total for their part in a 1982 massacre of 256 indigenous people during the 1960-1996 civil war. The sentence – the highest in Guatemala’s history - follows a similarly severe sentence issued last week against another former military member for a separate massacre. The first sentences for massacres committed during the civil war were handed down in August 2011.
