Diplomatic spat. Foreign minister Felipe Pérez Roque called on the US this week to provide an explanation for the “obscure ties" he claimed existed between diplomatic personnel in the US Interests Section in Havana, “terrorist groups" in Miami and prominent dissidents in Cuba. A junior foreign office minister presented the initial allegations that the head of the Section, Michael Parmly, had channelled funds from Santiago Alvarez, a Cuban-American jailed in the US for stockpiling illegal weapons, to dissidents such as Martha Beatriz Roque and the head of the Damas de Blanco, Laura Pollán [WR-08-20]. Pérez Roque's involvement suggests the Cubans are raising the stakes. The US Interests Section says it will only respond to a formal complaint and not allegations or claims made through the press.
