GUATEMALA: Colom seeks to end oil dependency

President Alvaro Colom has unveiled his latest strategy for combating spiralling inflation: a new energy policy designed to end Guatemala's dependency on oil. The announcement follows up on a 10-point emergency plan revealed earlier this month [WR-08-19]. Colom aims to reshape the current “energy matrix" by developing new sources of energy such as coal and hydroelectricity. He is likely to encounter resistance from civil society regarding the impact of his plan on local communities and the environment.
