ECUADOR: Presidential contest to become family feud?

“I echo the words with which Pope John Paul II inspired his Polish compatriots in 1979, helping to bring down the Berlin Wall, the symbol of Communism, 10 years later: ‘Have no fear’. I say that to all Ecuadoreans so that they can fight for their freedom.” These stirring, if somewhat hyperbolic, words were uttered not by the political leader of one of Ecuador’s traditional opposition parties but by Fabricio Correa, the brother of President Rafael Correa. Fabricio is intent on contesting the next presidential elections in February 2013 against his younger brother. It is doubtful whether Ecuador is truly big enough for two Correas but in the absence of any other obvious opposition figureheads, Fabricio is starting to attract more and more media attention.
