ECUADOR: EU forces change in Ecuador’s stance

The European Union (EU) called President Rafael Correa’s bluff over his terms for restarting trade talks. After a meeting with the Spanish prime minister on 17 March, Correa said that he wanted to restart trade negotiations with the EU but did not want a free trade deal along the lines of the EU’s deal with Peru and Colombia. Originally, the EU started negotiations with Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru in 2007, but Bolivia pulled out of the negotiations in 2008 and Ecuador in 2009. Peru and Colombia agreed a deal with EU in 2010.
