BOLIVIA: Morales gives marching orders

Bolivia has become the latest country in the region to lean on the military in the face of rising crime. Last week President Evo Morales deployed some 2,300 soldiers to Bolivia’s four biggest cities - La Paz, Santa Cruz, Cochabamba and El Alto - on a temporary basis to assist the police in its duties. Slammed by the opposition as “improvised”, the move follows recent protests against crime, calls for the reinstatement of the death penalty and the first ever government citizen security survey indicating that security tops the list of public concerns. That the government is taking the issue seriously is reflected in high-level meetings as well as efforts underway to draw up a draft law on citizen security.
