CUBA: Crackdown follows Correa’s Cartagena boycott

“Let’s get to the point: Why is Cuba not participating? Because of the blockade, the US boycott… They praise democracy, formal democracy - voting every now and then - not real democracy that concerns justice.” With these words Ecuador’s President Rafael Correa emphatically announced his intention not to attend the Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia, on 14 and 15 April. Hours later the Cuban authorities began arbitrarily arresting members of the Damas de Blanco (Ladies in White), who were commemorating the ninth anniversary of Primavera Negra, when 75 political dissidents were apprehended and summarily sentenced.
