Drug-war violence continued to rise in 2011, but it did so at a slower rate than in preceding years, as attested by all sources [SSR-12-01]. Attention has been focusing of late on the areas where that violence has actually decreased. The cases of Tijuana and Ciudad Juárez have been highlighted, and that of Guanajuato has merited some commentary. Now a study by a US academic institute has noted that there has been a considerable decline in several of the areas closest to the US, even as violence increased elsewhere in Mexico. As these details emerged, President Felipe Calderón has been raising the tone of his calls for the US to make a bigger contribution to the anti-drugs effort.
