In Brief - Uruguay

Uruguay | Police repress student-parent protest. On 28 March a group of 12 parents of some of the 200 students that attend the Liceo 70 in Montevideo took over the school and issued a statement saying that they would not leave the premises until they secured a response from authorities regarding the poor state of the building in which their children attend class. In the early afternoon, the interior ministry issued an eviction order; as the police were preparing to remove the protesters at 8pm, the group (which had grown to dozens of people), decided to blockade national road no1 by burning tires, which was repressed by the riot police in armoured vehicles using rubber bullets. This is the third school taken over by parents since the start of the school year in early March; the state of educational infrastructure is likely to become the latest headache for the administration of President José Mujica.
