Correa appoints new head of armed forces. On 12 April President Rafael Correa named the air force’s Lieutenant General Leonardo Barreiro as the new head of the armed forces, replacing army General Ernesto González. Barreiro, who was the commander of the Ecuadorean air force (2010-2012), will be replaced by General Enrique Velasco Dávila. President Correa did not make any changes to the leadership of the army or the navy and sent at least two higher-ranking officers into retirement in order to promote Barreiro; the date of his swearing in is yet to be announced.
