BOLIVIA: Looking ahead to 2014

The ruling Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) recently held a national summit in which President Evo Morales was unanimously picked as its candidate to run in the 2014 general election. Serving as the latest reminder of the lack of potential successors to Morales, the move was not a surprise despite lingering doubts surrounding the President’s eligibility to stand - the 2009 plurinational constitution allows for only two consecutive presidential terms and Morales took office in 2006 and 2010. The move also comes weeks after leading opposition figures such as Samuel Doria Medina, of the centre-right Unidad Nacional (UN), hailed as “an example” and “cause for hope” the success of Henrique Capriles Radonski, who won the primary elections for the Venezuelan opposition coalition in February. Doria Medina has since called for a similar process of opposition primaries ahead of 2014.
