ECUADOR: Meting out punishment

A court in the central province of Cotopaxi sentenced seven people to jail in mid April for conspiring against state security during the police uprising on 30 September 2010 (30-S); during uprising President Rafael Correa was briefly sequestered in a military hospital before being rescued by special forces. These are the first civilians to be sentenced in connection with the events of 30-S. In late June last year, an Ecuadorean court found six police officers guilty of conspiring against state security on 30-S. These were the first sentences of any kind in relation to the uprising, in which the government claims 1,199 members of the security forces, mainly police, participated.
