CHILE |
Government makes financial gesture to students. The government announced a set of proposals this week aimed at reforming the country’s higher education financing system. The announcement came two days before a national march, organised by Chile’s student’s confederation (Confech) to protest against the lack of progress that the government has made in addressing the demands made during the months of protests staged throughout the country last year, was scheduled to take place. Chile’s education minister, Harald Beyer, explained that the proposals involve the scrapping of the current state-backed student credit system (CAE) through which students obtain loans from private banks. It is to be replaced with a new system which seeks to eliminate the participation of private banks in favour of exclusive state financing.
