HONDURAS: Congress approves polemical police law

Congress rushed through a new police law last week designed to strike a blow against organised crime. The supreme court was joined by a host of human rights groups in raising concerns about the concentration of power in the hands of a discredited police force. The government had tried to counter this criticism by including within the law some stringent measures to control corruption in the police, such as drug tests and lie detector tests.
