BOLIVIA: Tarija votes for autonomy

The fourth and final “media luna" department, Tarija held its autonomy vote on 22 June. There were no major surprises; around 80% of voters backed the cause. Buoyed by the result, the other “media luna" prefects from Santa Cruz, Beni and Pando then refused to recognise the 10 August recall vote, which will either confirm President Evo Morales and the nine prefects in power or remove them. However, the prefects' position is rapidly losing them support from various sectors, including the political opposition. Prefectural elections scheduled to take place in Chuquisaca on 29 June will serve as the next litmus test of support for Morales and the opposition.
