PERU: Uneasy truce after Moquegua mining protest

Ten days of violent demonstrations in the southern department of Moquegua came to an end on 20 June after the government managed to reach an agreement with regional authorities who had demanded a bigger share of mining royalties. It is not the first time that a peaceful protest begun by regional presidents and mayors has turned violent as their cause becomes hijacked by more radical protesters.
