COLOMBIA: New interior minister faces big challenges

President Alvaro Uribe appointed a new interior and justice minister this week after the previous incumbent, Carlos Holguí­n, unexpectedly decided to step down on 20 June in order to pursue his presidential ambitions next year. Uribe was reputedly less than impressed with Holguí­n's fulfilment of his role as the bridge between the executive and legislative branches of government. His successor, Fabio Valencia Cossí­o, faces the immediate challenge of marshalling support in congress for a new political reform bill, after 20 July and pushing through a constitutional amendment allowing Uribe to seek a third term.
