COLOMBIA: Farc’s record-breaking U-turn

Just two months ago the Colombian government, common citizens, domestic and international human rights defence groups and the wider international community were celebrating the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc)’s announcement that it would no longer kidnap civilians as a means to finance its activities [WR-12-09]. However, the government’s call for caution when numerous local commentators began speculating about the possibility that this move would lead to peace talks has now been proved to be well-founded. The Farc has gone back on its word and returned to old practices, kidnapping a foreign journalist, labelling him a prisoner of war (POW) and conditioning his release on an exchange with a Farc member captured in Venezuela in April 2011 [WR-11-17].
