The government succeeded in pushing through the lower chamber of
congress a key plank of President Michelle Bachelet's policy agenda last week:
the education reform bill (LGE, in the Spanish acronym). The political cost,
however, was high. Lacking a majority, the government was forced to make
concessions to the opposition coalition Alianza por Chile to ensure the bill's
passage. This irked deputies from the ruling Concertación who were only
prevented from giving the government a bloody nose by a late promise which it
could struggle to fulfil. The debate took place against the backdrop of
