In Brief – Nicaragua

POLITICS |Electoral reform package approved. On 15 May Nicaragua’s 92-member national assembly which is controlled by the ruling Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN), approved an electoral reform package. Among various provisions, the changes triple the number of municipal councilors from the current 2,178 to 6,534 across the country’s 153 municipalities; and allows for the re-election of all local officials. The law also aims to strengthen the electoral process by improving the system for issuing cédulas (national identity cards) and ensuring the representation of electoral officials from all parties. It also incorporates a change establishing that lists of local government candidates must include an equal number of men and women.
