MEXICO: Bad news on two fronts for the PAN

For the ruling Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) the news, with elections looming in July, could not have been worse. Inter-cartel violence, rising sharply in the first four months, hit new peaks of brutality in the first half of May. The launch of a large deployment of troops and police in Morelos failed to convey the impression that security efforts were on track. Then came the purely political development: PAN candidate Josefina Vázquez Mota had slipped to third place in the opinion polls.
