GUATEMALA | Ríos Montt faces another charge. On 21 May Judge Patricia Flores ruled that there was enough evidence to try the former dictator Efraín Ríos Montt (1982-1983) for genocide in relation to the  Las Dos Erres massacre, one of the most brutal atrocities in the country’s 36-year civil war (1960-1996), in which more than 200 civilians were killed. The charge against Ríos Montt is the second filed since Flores announced in January that he would face trial for at least 72 incidents involving an estimated 1,771 deaths and the displacement of nearly 30,000 Guatemalans during his 17-month period in power. The January decision was hailed by human rights activists as a major step forward for the country in its efforts to redress past impunity [WR-12-05].
